As you say barge I suspect you are not familiar with inland boating and suspect that you mean narrowboat. I doubt the Grand Union Canal would be very suitable because it is hard work with double locks but if the children are willing to do a lot of work it would be OK. IF and its is something of an IF you can get just 4 nights in the peak season it will mean an out and back cruise because there are no four night rings in the south. Now you say towns plural and this will be hard because you will only have perhaps three days actual boating and taking time off to walk around a village or two eats into it. I would suggest your options are a boat from Guildford on the River Wey and visit Godalming, a narrowboat from College Cruisers in Oxford and either do the Thames to Abingdon & Dorchester or up the canal & visit Thrupp and Lower Heyford. There are a number of hirefleets in the Napton area from which you could visits Braunston, Rugby and possibly Brinklow. I would suggest that you order the Blakes and Hoseasons brochures to see the variety of bases available to you. I am sure the readers will chip in with a few more suggestions. Tony Brooks
