Post Subject: Stern gland re-packing

Hi, I own a 45 foot all steel narrowboat, with a 1.5 litre BMC diesel engine. How often should the stern gland be re-packed. I keep the grease tube full, and not much water is coming through at the moment. Is this part of an annual service, or just 'as and when'??? Thanks

Post Subject: Stern gland re-packing

It is an as & when job. Starting with a newly packed gland you will adjust it several times over the years when the drips at the end of a day's cruise exceed 1 to 2 a a minute. Eventuality you will run out of adjustment and nit will require repacking. I adjusted (not repacked) mine about 11 year ago and have not adjusted it since. This may be exceptional, however an old boat with a badly worn shaft may need adjusting every few weeks. I would suggest that you have a look at my website (http://www.tb-training.co.uk/10sgear.htm#bmn31) where it is all explained. Tony Brooks
