Post Subject: isuzu 35hp diesel engine

hi we have just bought a sailaway narrowboat that was built in 2006 but has never been in the water it was bought as a project but never started. could anyone tell me whether any damage would have been caused by having the engine stood still all this time and the best way to proceed. sorry if this is a silly question but i know nothing regarding engines :o)

If the engine was properly prepared for long term storage it should be fine. However I suspect it was not but the worst that I can see is that the oil has drained away from the cylinders and bearings. Light rusting may also have taken place on the bores. If I was going to starts it I would do something a little different but as you say you know nothing you need a simple procedure. First of all turn the engine over at least two complete turns BY HAND (this is bad practise but if you can not get at the big nut holding the bottom belt pulley on put a spanner on the alternator pulley nut and use that to turn the engine. You will also have to push on the alternator belt). Make sure the engine oil level is correct, get someone to manually operate the stop control so it will not start while you spin the engine on the starter for several 30 second bursts. That should get the oil around the inside a bit. Then starts it but do NOT rev it for at least 5 minutes. Tony Brooks
