I also can not use a dipstick and get by topping up on engine hours - never come near to running out yet. I have never come across a triangular sender unit but you should still be able to make a gasket. Run the tank down so you can get it out without leaks, take it out and see if the float is full of fuel. From 1973 I would expect it to be metal float that can be drained and re-soldered of if it is plastic try getting just a new float from a car breakers. You could have a look at who supply pneumatic fuel gauges that fit the side or top of the tank. Tony Brooks
