Post Subject: Honda 9.9 cdi unit

Hello. I have an old 9.9 4 stroke Honda. It would only start if I waggled the CDI unite? But... I have made a grave mistake and tried to start it with the battery on the wrong way round oops. Now there is nothing. What damage have I caused? Thanks in advance.

If you reverse connect anything with semi-conductors in it you are very likely to blow them. Without the factory diagrams this could be the CDI unit and the rectifiers in the battery charging output of the magneto/alternator. Regrettably without dealer type information about the specific engine I can not say more. Tony Brooks

Thanks for your reply Tony. Im going to start with replacing the CDI unite as I feel it was faulty before. It is a Shindengen with 9.N 171 on the back. Could you tell me the best place to get one from please?

Before you do that please make sure ALL possible "earth" or negative connections are cleaned up. This is known to cause intermittent operation. I can only advise that you try your local Honda OB agent. In fact without specialist knowledge and equipment I suspect you could end up spending a lot on unneeded parts so it could be cheaper to get the specialist to have a look & test it. Tony Brooks
