Post Subject: Interior paint - what to use?

Hello, I'm looking to paint my boat's interior and am looking for advice on any particular brands / specifications that I should aim for. It's been suggested for me to first use a primer that is suitable for bathrooms/damp places so to help avoid mould/mildew, but is there any specific paint I should use for the topcoat - or can I use normal house paint? It is for painting over tongue and groove. Thank you!

I suspect the preparation will be vital in obtaining a satisfactory end result but I am no paint expert. It will be important to clean the existing surface and give it a good key with special attention to the grooves. I do not see how a primer can stop mildew and mould because they form on the surface not within the paint film but it might ell be a good idea to use a complete kitchen or bathroom system. That is primer for any bare patches, specific undercoat and specific topcoat for the system you choose. I see little point in recommending anything because any modern system from a reputable supplier should last well. Remember the more matt the finish the more likely it is to have a tendency to mark as you brush past and possibly dust on your cloths. Again this will depend upon the system you choose. Why not visit one of the "trade counter" suppliers in your area (most large manufacturers have them) and ask their advice. I hope Phil or other readers will give their opinion. Tony Brooks

lucy, i painted my boat firstly with undercoat followed by a satin top coat. use paint that is suitable for wood its better than the normal paint used for walls and ceilings and will give a better finish. also i find applying the paint with a small gloss roller will give a neater finish. i agree with tony that matt paint will mark easier.satin or gloss will clean easier and is more resistant to splashes. hope this helps
