Post Subject: Novice in need of help

Can anyone give me some advice, me and my husband are very new to this game but have decided to buy a canal boat for a project to spend some time together. We looked at one yesterday, it was 32 years old! Had the original engine and wasn't in too bad condition inside ( not that that bothered us) the owner wants £18,000 for it. Obviously we would have a survey done if we were to go ahead, but what I want to know is are we just throwing our money away as we have found out that she is also a springer. Should we be looking for something a lot younger? Any advice gratefully received .

First of all I am rather concerned about your use of the word "project". If that means you intend to refurbish the boat then please be aware that such undertakings by working people are usually measured in years, not months and certainly not weeks. If you strip it out and get fed up part way through then you will have wasted a great deal of your money and all of it of you just leave it to rust away. There is nothing inherently wrong with Springers but they were a budget boat at a budget price and will always be at the cheap end of the market whatever you do I doubt it could ever be made to sell for much more than the price you quote - perhaps £20,000 at the absolute most. However this is only a guess because you have not given the boat's size. If it is one of the small Springers I doubt it is worth even £18,000. It is probably true to say that the majority of Springers were built of thin steel - perhaps 4mm hull and bottom where as today the bottom would be 10mm thick and the sides 6 or 8mm thick. This is not bad in itself but if the hull has got rust pits in it there is less metal left to keep the water out. You need to be exceptionally careful and I agree a survey for at least the hull condition is vital. In any case most insurance companies demand a survey within the last 5 years once the hull gets to between 20 and 30 years old, depending upon company. This will be an additional ongoing expense and the thin hull plating (assuming yours was built like this) means that you would be well advised to have the hull blacked more frequently than perhaps you might on a modern boat. Tony, Thank you ever so much for your advice, especially about the steel thickness, this is our biggest worry and I think we have decided that a younger boat would maybe suit us better. I will deffinatley take you up on your offer of looking at anything we are interested in, many thanks again.
