Post Subject: Teleflex engine controls

The teleflex dual action engine control lever on my yanmar engine seems very stiff to move between forward and reverse, also the red center button is soeties difficult to engage to put the engine into neutral. Does anyone have any idea why and how to service this control

Check the cable adjustment as follows. Disconnect the gear cable from the gearbox (easier than the control end) with the lever in neutral. Make sure the fixing simply drops into place without a struggle. If no use the adjustment between the inner cable and the fixing so it does. Put the control into slow ahead or astern and repeat for the throttle cable. Whilst doing this make sure the gearbox and throttle levers are free to move. Next disconnect both ends of the inner cables and make sure you can move them easily. If not make sure there are no tight bends or kinks in the cable and if there are none renew the cable. If none of that helps I think you need to work out how to lubricate the control. It varies from model to model but you may find you can do it without dismantling if you use a can of aerosol spray grease and the nylon tube supplied with it. Tony Brooks
