Post Subject: Plating over bow thruster tube holes

Hi Tony, my 58' narrowboat has a bow thruster tube fitted, however I have no intention of fitting a thruster so the tube is redundant. My boat is about to be blacked so I'm considering having the tube ends blanked off by having plates welded over them. Have you any advice to give on the idea and thoughts on any pitfalls? My regards, Ray.

As long as the blanking plates are close to hull As them how they will ensure full weld penetration. They should tell you that they will chamfer the plates and apply several runs of weld. This is fairly standard practise so if they do not explain something along these lines take care. The last thing you need to a pinhole in the weld that you only find when the tube pinholes. sorry about the reply - I am on a laptop with a flaky internet connection. The end of the first line should read "Close to hull thickness. Ask them ....." TB
