Post Subject: oil leak

Hi We Barrus Shire 1643 3 cyl engine and has an oil leak seems to be coming from a rubber plug near the oil filter when the plug is removed you can see the flywheel. I think oil is being thrown up by the flywheel does this mean the crankshaft seal has gone

Post Subject: oil leak

AS long as any liquid in the engine drip tray is below the level of the sump/flywheel housing then it would tend to indicate an oil leak. If it is blackish oil then the rear main bearing oil seal would be a likely candidate although depending upon the exact design of the engine there is a very faint chance it could be a leaking oil drilling plug of some sort. If the oil is fairly clean and red or amber then it could be a leaking front gearbox oil seal. The first thing to do is to clean out the engine drip tray to eliminate that. Then worry about anything more serious.
