Post Subject: propshaft bearing

after a engine repair boatyard said next time out of water replace stern bearing so have done it a brass sleeve near prop + shaft, brass tube & stuffing box so what is the bearing in the boat, stuffing box with its packing ? can't see it being anything else

I have known a white metal bearing, a Cutless "rubber" bearing, and a plain brass casting used as bearings at that location. One can never be 100% sure unless it can be inspected but it is most likely that you are correct. Its the packing and the brass casting "behind" the packing.

Thanks for your reply, it seems a no brainer not to have a thrust bearing to take the load at this point so this winter's job will be fitting a Python or Aqua drive which should be a great improvement Regards PS
