Post Subject: Solar in parlell with inverter charger?

I am installing 480W of solar panels on our boat with a MPPT controller which has 3 stage charging. We already have a Victron inverter charger. Do I have to add a switch to isolate the solar when we're on hook-up to prevent the 2 chargers fighting or will they happily co-exist?

They should co-exist, especially during the early stages of charging. The only thing that may happen once the batteries are getting close to fully charged is that one may shut down or go into float because the other's slightly higher voltage fools it. This should not be any problem and whichever does (if either) should set itself when a load is applied to the electrical system. Of more concern with a lot of solar is that on bright days with lots of cruising sometimes the alternator *replaced* down or pulses on and off. Its nothing to worry about and again putting a load on the system will usually stop it. Often you get to hear the alternator charge buzzer beeping to itself.
