Post Subject: Which antifreeze?

Hi Tony, I want to change the antifreeze in my narrowboat which is fitted with a Lister Petter LPWS4 engine ,cooled by a skin tank and heating a calorifier. When I visited my local motor factor, the range of antifreeze types on offer is frankly, bewildering. The Lister operator's handbook states "coolant concentrate should comply with BS6580:1985", which as far as I can tell, doesn't take account of OAT or IAT types. Can you please offer some guidance of which type I should use? Thanks, Geoff

Post Subject: Which antifreeze?

I can not go against what Lister say. Your post implies any antifreeze that meets that BS is suitable. I understand that the problem with mixing antifreeze with different inhibitor types is that doing so can cause the inhibitors to precipitate out of the solution and on a car this can block waterways. The loss of inhibitors would allow internal corrosion but the antifreeze properties are reported as not being reduced. I restate that I can not go against Lister's advice but when I changed from blue two year antifreeze to red five year antifreeze in my Bukh I took care to drain the system, refilled with water, run up to temperature so the water circulated and the drained down two or three times. This should have flushed any remaining antifreeze out of he system. I then refilled with the red.
