Post Subject: Lister HR2 with PRM100 gearbox, what prop?

I'm putting a Lister HR2 into a 60ft narrowboat, it has a prm100 gearbox which i'm told will allow me to fit a propeller of either rotation and just run the box to suit? What size prop will do? The draft is 22 inch but with drop down skeg allowing a large prop. I've seen a 20x20 and a 22x22, are these any use? Thanks.

Post Subject: Lister HR2 with PRM100 gearbox, what prop?

Dear Casper, To be sure about the size and pitch you need a specialist prop supplier who is experienced in narrow boats. If you want a rough idea Google Castle marine and download their prop calculator. In any case you do not give enough information. You will need the engine power and maximum rpm (I think the Lister engines may be capable of different setups) and also the gearbox reduction ratio. the draft is no good at all because the waterline will be above the uxter (swim) plate, you need the height of the stern post and then allow two inches of clearance all round to find the maximum prop diameter. It may well turn out that the diameter you can actually swing is less than is optimum, so a special prop might be required. Sorry not to be much help but I get the impression that experience counts for a lot in matching a prop to a boat if you want the best from it rather than just adequate performance - especially with the cost of fuel.
