Post Subject: Hull Blacking

Tony back to the hull blacking conundrum I'm afraid. I've done the rag and spirit test as you advised and it definitely blackens indicating bitumen based blacking. What I am now confused with is the array of products available - I already have a tin of black bitumen varnish is this suitable? I know you wont endorse specific products but if you can point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks

Dear Richard, AS I have no knowledge of what you say is bitumen varnish, a term I have not heard before, I can not give a definitive opinion, but I suspect it will be OK. However take care because I have heard of Tar Varnish and that will not be compatible. FWIW I tend to use something known as Premium Blacking because it is a little more than just bitumen and should resist diesel a little better, but as you say there are loads of products so, to A degree its down to availability.
