Post Subject: Generators

Hi, I want a generator to power a 1.1kw (1000 watts) Emersion heater on my narrow boat. It will only be required to work for half an hour per day. I seem to get mixed responce from sales outlets. What power outlet would you recomend? Barrie

An immersion heater is an inductive load so there is no power factor involved. This means that in theory a 1kW (1000 watts is 1kW)one should do in theory. However I suspect the rating of the budget models may well be optimistic so I would say a 1.5 or 2kW to give you a bit of an overhead to account for an optimistic rating. Tony Brooks

Thanks Tony, I have spoke to several generator specialist and they seem to give conflicting answers. I wondered if they were try to sell as bigger output as possible to put up the price. Thanks again Barrie

I suspect they are far more concerned about power factors that under certain loads reduce the generator's effective output by about 30% or more - not that it should apply to a simple immersion heater. There is also a question of the surge demanded on start up as the heater element comes up to temperature. We usually recon perhaps an extra 20 to 30%. Taking both into account I could easily suggest a 2kW generator to make sure you do not come back and complain - especially if the generator is not made by one of the front line companies.
