A cruise around the Cheshire ring plus a side trip to Chester sounds like an excellent and not too strenuous fortnight's boating. Alternatively, you might like to take a detour from Kidsgrove through Harecastle Tunnel and up the Caldon Canal, one of my favourites. Or for a shorter diversion, how about the Upper Peak Forest to Whaley Bridge and Bugsworth for some splendid scenery and a visit to the fascinating Bugsworth Basin complex. Finally for something completely different, you could take a trip down the Anderton Lift and spend a few days exploring the Weaver - which despite its industrial past is a pleasant rural river for much of its length, and only runs past chemical works and salt mines for a couple of miles.
