Post Subject: Agglomerator or Sedimenter

Can you please tell me what the difference is between a Agglomerator and a Sedimenter, or are they both the same thing. I have just had my boat inspected for the BSS licence and was told it has failed because this thing which the diesel goes through has a glass bottle and it should all be metal. It is fixed in the fuel line after the diesel tank and before the engine but I am not sure what its proper name is to order a metal one. Hope you can give me the proper name for it. Thanks

If it is a CAV/Delphi unit they both use a lot of common parts but the sedimentor has an inverted cone either attached to the top or in the removable top section. The agglomerator has a filter as the top section. If you go onto ASAP-supplies.com and look in the Fuel filter section you will see pictures of the CAV units. The sedimentors are numbers 302004 and 302005. They also list the metal bowl as a conversion. You may also need the metal drain plug. Your local diesel equipment specialist should be able to supply the parts as well. Tony Brooks

Thanks Tony for your reply. Can you tell me if mine is a CAV type. The top of mine is the same as part No. 302001-3. I have looked at it today but I cnnot see any writing on it etc to say what type it is, thanks again for your help I am just frightened of ordering the wrong thing.

There is little standardisation within the boating world and none for older and inland boats so how you expect me to confirm something I have never seen is beyond me. The item illustrated at the top of the list that gives the number you quote is indeed a CAV type head but if the item immediately below that on your boat has no number on it it is probably a sedimentor. Unfortunately some CAV type sedimentors have their cones attached to the head and some in an intermediate housing. If its the later you may or may not need an extension for the centre bolt. I think you need a photo and take that to your local fuel injection equipment specialist for advice. Tony Brooks
