Post Subject: Moorings

Is there any minimum requirement or recommendation for the distance between moored boats on a canal side mooring which takes in to account fire risk etc, or can they be moored stern to bow with no gaps?

Dear Chris, it would be useful to know why you want this information. In a marina or permanent on-line moorings it would be up to the mooring operator to carry out a risk assessment and act accordingly. I also think that the Warwickshire Fire Brigade may have a view on this. I know the IWA Events organisation has strict guidelines it follows at festivals but the fire gaps (and let the boater who has fallen in find a way out gap) are between blocks of boats and not between each boat so you get perhaps blocks of three or four boats with others rafted outside them and then a wider gap. Phone Warwickshire fire brigade and the IWA to see what they have to say and if you are in dispute wit a mooring operator you could try asking to see their risk assessment but do not be surprised if you are thrown out. Chris, after further thought. If you are thinking about organising a boating event that involves the general public or a significant number of boaters the relevant local authority may well require you to jump through all sorts of hoops and part of that will involve making plans to satisfy the local police & fire service so early contact with them about these matters is vital.
